The UK government may prohibit bookmakers from sponsoring sports teams in revising national gambling laws. The leadership of the English Football League opposed this, explaining their position by possible negative consequences for small FCs, which are forced to fight for their existence during the coronavirus pandemic.
AFL representatives noted that, firstly, sports organizations should have the right to freely conduct commercial activities, and secondly, the increase in the number of sponsoring bookmakers in football has not increased problematic gambling.
There is no evidence that banning such sponsorship will reduce the spread of problem gambling, the English Football League noted.
The United Kingdom reportedly banned the use of credit cards for gambling, except for the purchase of national lottery tickets.
Before that, the British authorities decided to introduce a ban on the participation of children in any form of gambling, including lotteries.
