Edinburgh City Football Club, which plays in the Scottish Second League, has announced its support for the campaign against advertising of gambling and the end of sponsorship of gambling operators in sports.
FC representatives noted that it was time for the team to make all relationships with partners ethically correct.
Football has the potential to be a powerful force for good, which is why Edinburgh City FC must enhance its extremely positive physical and psychological impact, the team said.
NewsOfGambling wrote that earlier the English FC Preston North End, which also supported the anti-betting campaign, stopped working with its sponsor – gambling operator 32Red.
In addition, another English football club, Forest Green Rovers, reportedly opposed the sponsorship and advertising of gambling operators. The club supported the public organization “Gambling with Lives”, which opposed sponsorship and advertising of gambling operators in football.
According to the club’s management, gambling has prevailed over football: matches are crammed with gambling advertisements – from advertisements during broadcasts to the logos of operators at stadiums. It has become an abuse of football and fans, according to Forest Green Rovers.
UK gambling legislation is outdated and needs to be changed – especially due to the continued proliferation of online gambling; and if sponsorship of sporting events by tobacco companies was prohibited, then this should be done in relation to gambling sponsorship, said the organization “Gambling with Lives”.
As part of the revision of the gambling legislation, the UK authorities may prohibit bookmakers from sponsoring sports teams.
