Macau authorities announced the closure of all casinos in the region for two weeks due to the risk of the spread of coronavirus. This was reported on a local TV channel. The decision was made by the head of the region, Ho Iat Seng.
For the first time the authorities announced the possible closure of gambling establishments in mid-January. But only in February the decision has been definitely made, and Macau casinos stop operating from February 12. Explaining the reasons for the decision, officials explained that the ninth case of coronavirus was registered in the province and a casino employee became one of its employees. In addition, the flow of guests to the gambling establishments of Macau was already sharply reduced in January 2020 due to fears of players to become infected in crowded places.
The head of the region, Ho Iat Seng, held a meeting with representatives of the gambling business. He agreed with them about a fact that all casino employees will continue to receive salaries, despite the forced closure of establishments.
In the special administrative region of China Macau there are 41 casinos. They installed more than six thousand gaming tables and 17 thousand slot machines. In the entire history of the existence of the gambling zone, casinos in Macau have closed their doors only once – in September 2018 because of typhoon Manghut. According to Bloomberg’s information, that time as a result of a suspension of work for 33 hours, entrepreneurs lost more than $ 186 million.
