In gambling establishments in Las Vegas, there is the possibility of cashless payment of chips at the table. The service is currently being provided in test mode at Palms and Red Rock casinos. In the near future, this system will also appear in the gambling establishments such as Golden Gate, Strat and others.
The technology of buying chips at the tables is called Automated Cashless System (ACS) and it is distributed in the casino under the PlayOn trademark. The croupier at the game table has a terminal with which the casino visitor can buy chips if it’s necessary. The description indicates that the device accepts only debit cards. The main convenience of the new system is that the client does not have to interrupt the game to cash out money or purchase chips at the casino cash desk.
Experts fear that new technology may cause problems for casino visitors. The Executive Director of the National Council on Gambling Issues (NCPG) said that such innovations are aimed only at generating additional income for gambling establishments by keeping players at the table. He is afraid that this could aggravate the problem of gambling addiction.
Researcher at the University of Memphis James P. Willan said that it takes time to learn new technologies and in particular Automated Cashless Systems. He also noted that operators should inform players about any technologies that create risks of additional losses and the formation of gamblers’ addiction.
