Governor of Kentucky Democrat Andrew Beshear calls on the state legislature to legalize online gambling.
Andy took over as governor in November 2019, after removing Republican Matt Bevin, who opposed online gambling. Matt had his own view on the gambling industry: on the one hand, he opposed land-based casinos, claiming that suicides were happening there daily, and on the other hand, he expanded the gambling business to finance an imperfect pension system.
At the beginning of his cadet term, Andrew proved that he was pro online gambling and was ready to promote and support its introduction on the state’s ordinary life. A drafted bill has already approved by the House Committee in January. The final vote will be given by the Internal Rules Committee.
Is it true that the reason of legalization of online poker is caused by budget crisis?
Kentucky has a budget crisis. The government is worried that this could lead to job cuts, but Andrew Beshear has a plan to fill the budget holes. According to the new governor, online gambling is an unused source for state funding. As he said there are lots of unused sources of income in Kentucky, which are widely used in other states, such as Indiana. So it means that Kentucky simply loses every year $ 500,000,000 just because of prohibition of online gambling.
And if in November the bill included only the legalization of sports betting, in December online poker and fantasy sports were added to it. The bill received unanimous support for the licensing and administrative committee in the House of Representatives, and now everything is in the hands of the Internal Rules Committee.
A similar bill was discussed last year, but it did not find Senate support. But some experts think that the current situation in the state will influence on the final decision about the legalization of online games in Kentucky and in the end the law can be passed in the near future.
