The success of the Russian fencers was quite expected: before the start of the tournament, the bookmakers considered Deriglazova the favorite, evaluating her victory in the final match with a coefficient of 1.47. At the same time, analysts had almost no doubt that Inna would bring a medal from Tokyo – bets on such an outcome were taken for 1.2.
But they believed in Larisa Korobeinikova much less. The athlete was not among the favorites, and her chances of winning a medal were estimated at 5.5.
Deriglazova made her way to the final match very confidently. In the quarter-finals, the Russian woman defeated Fanny Kreiss from Hungary with a score of 15:10, and then knocked out the Korean woman Chon Hee Suk, beating her with a score of 15: 7. After that, Inna won Alice Volpi (15:10) and reached the final, where her rival was American Lee Kiefer.
Alas, this meeting turned out to be extremely difficult for Deriglazova. After a relatively equal first period, the American began to gain an advantage. Inna tried to equalize the score, scoring three successful hits in a row at the end of the match, but Kiefer still took the victory with a close result of 15:13.
It is curious that before the start of the tournament, the bookmakers did not even include Lee Kiefer in the top five favorites, and her chances of winning a medal were estimated at 2.75 odds. However, although Deriglazova did not manage to win in the final, she still took the “silver”.
Larisa Korobeinikova reached the semifinals, beating Canadian Kelly Ryan with a score of 15:11, but she also could not pass Lee Kiefer, so she fought Volpi for third place. As a result of a tense battle, the Russian woman won with a score of 15:10 and brought Russia a bronze medal.
